Otto Neurath (Vienna, December 10, 1882 – Oxford, December 22, 1945) was an Austrian philosopher of science, sociologist, and political economist. He was founding director of the “Gesellschafts- and Wirtschaftsmuseum” (Social and economic museum of Vienna) and initiator as well as chief theorist of the Vienna Method. From a graphic designer’s point of view, one of the main contributions of Neurath was Isotype (International System of TYpographic Picture Education). This is a method of showing social, technological, biological and historical connections in pictorial form. It was introduced as the Vienna Method of Pictorial Statistics (Wiener Methode der Bildstatistik).
